For many people, they possess a desire to truly make a difference in the world around them, but are unsure how to do that because they have limited amounts of time and resources to give toward a cause. It’s important to know that you can make a difference, even if you do not have a lot of spare money or time. There are plenty of ways to be philanthropic that are small and can be easily practiced.
Think about family & friends
There might be someone who lives near you or in your family that you know has been going through a difficult time. Maybe you can help them out financially, with something tangible, or by spending time with them. Instead of finding an official organization to give your time to, you might be able to help out someone close to you.
Teach others to be philanthropic
If you have young children, one of the best ways you can make a difference in the world is by raising them to be philanthropic themselves. Lead by example and take them to volunteer or donate and talk to them about current issues. Raising philanthropic and empathetic children is vitally important to the future of the world.
Clean up around you
Take time to pick up trash in your yard or as you walk around your neighborhood. Keep a disposable bag with you to put trash in and later throw away or recycle. Maybe take an afternoon to clean up part of a local park. Also, if you don’t already, set up recycling for your house. You’ll generate less waste and help out the environment.
Donate old items
It’s extremely likely that you have old clothes, furniture, books, or other household items you no longer need or rarely use. Sort through the possessions you no longer want and then donate them to your local thrift store or homeless shelter.
Volunteer when you can
A common misconception is that to volunteer, you need to set aside hours every week. However, even if you can only volunteer one day a year, it’s still worth it. Find a local charity that’s okay with you volunteering when you can and does not have a set amount of time you have to give. Most places are happy to have the help, so it shouldn’t be hard to find somewhere.
A great way to make a difference to those around you is just listening to others. Sometimes, all someone needs is a person who cares about their problems and will listen to them talk. By showing kindness to everyone around you, you can truly make the world a better place, one small act at a time.
